My exposure to Agile began with Systematic Software Engineering, a Danish company which continues to use XP, Scrum, Lean and other Agile methods. I managed multiple concurrent projects for military and healthcare customers, as well as acting as the QA manager for much of my tenure. These project were mostly built upon an in-house Electronic Data Interchange engine which supported multiple EDI standards for each market vertical. With a small development team, it was essential to minimise disruption and downtime in order to optimise our performance, which lead to the adoption of then-emerging Agile practices; when supporting the sales team it was my role to introduce the customer to Systematic’s development methodology and ensure their understanding and commitment to the process.
After moving to Canada, I was with the Ontario HIV Treatment Network, fulfilling a key role as the PM for a project focused on providing enhanced clinical tools and a secure method for transfering patient data to a research database. A critical element was to manage the relationships with our stakeholder groups and the vendors / service suppliers (e.g. negotiating for PKI certificates to support secure data transfer). After conducting a risk assessment, a significant portion of my time was spent ensuring our key supplier adopted more robust practices (e.g. change control, documentation, formal testing). The pilot phase was deemed successful by all the stakeholders and the province-wide rollout phase was moved under the umbrella of the Ministry’s ePhysician project.
I joined Siemens as the first Scrum Master for the Thornhill-based product development group. During the pilot phase I was the Scrum Master and coach for a cross-functional team, helping them as they experienced elements of Scrum and XP. As well as being instrumental in the rollout to the rest of the dev group, I mentored the three new Scrum Masters, coached the Product Owner group, and supported the management team as they grappled with the transition. During my first 18 months on the project I was also the Scrum Master for three cross-functional Scrum teams concurrently; being able to compare the adoption levels across these teams helped me develop better techniques and strategies for future process migrations. For the subsequent release I took on the overall project management role, which required being focused more on the group’s relationship with the other parts of Siemens, striving to integrate our Agile development outputs into a wider Waterfall organisation.
After leaving Siemens I was able to spend more time engaging with members of the Agile community, both online and here in Toronto (XP Toronto & Toronto Agile), participate in local technology and social media groups (e.g. DemoCamp), as well as starting a group for photowalkers in the GTA.
I am currently (March/April 2010) a Scrum coach with PointClickCare, working with three multi-disciplinary teams, their Scrum Masters and Product Owners.
